Mingachevir is the fourth most populous city in Azerbaijan. It is located on both banks of the Kura River. Mingachevir ranks fourth in the country in terms of its economic potential and population. It is the center of energetics and industry, devoting special attention to science, education, and culture.
The Mingachevir reservoir – the most important for entire Azerbaijan – is located here. It was created to develop the power industry, agriculture, and water transportation. Locals even call it "Mingachevir Sea". The reservoir has clean recreational sands and a camping site. The city is home to the State Drama Theater named after Marziyya Davudova, a puppet theater, a regional local history museum covering the rich history of the region and the country, as well as the City Art Museum exhibiting a large number of works by Azerbaijani artists as part of its collection.
